The 3rd Abdullah Yusuf Ali Memorial Lecture

Lecture delivered by Dr Louay Fatoohi, at International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS),
Petaling Jaya, 16 February 2013.

The Third Abdullah Yusuf Ali Memorial Lecture was held in Petaling Jaya, at the Conference Hall of International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS), attended by 200 participants.

The subject of the lecture, "The Controversy of Abrogation (Naskh)" had been widely thought to be academic and too scholarly for a layman to understand. However, British Muslim scholar Dr Louay Fatoohi's presentation of the lecture aided with graphs and pictures was well received by the audience, most of whom later admitted that they had expected a lecture fraught with difficult terminology.

Keeping to its tradition, the Lecture event began with recitation from the Holy Qur'an by Khairul Anuar Basri. In his welcoming speech, Hishamudin Ubaidulla, acting chairman of IBT's board of trustees, introduced the speaker, Dr Fatoohi, who has a BSc in Physics from the College of Sciences, University of Baghdad, and a PhD in Astronomy from the Physics Department, Durham University, UK. Several of his books have been published by IBT, including The Prophet Joseph in the Qur'an, the Bible, and History and The Mystery of the Historical Jesus.

Dr Fatoohi's 40-minute lecture was followed by a lively question-and-answer session on the subject of the day, during which the full text of the lecture in the form of the Souvenir book was distributed.

In conjunction with the Lecture, Dr Fatoohi's Malaysian edition of his latest book Abrogation in the Qur'an and Islamic Law: A Critical Study of the Concept of Naskh and its Impact, was also launched. As in past events, IBT titles were sold at discount prices during the lecture. The next lecture under the Abdullah Yusuf Ali Memorial Lecture series will be announced on the website or Facebook.
